You are Jenny Wong, secretary to the principal of a secondary school. Some students of the school have recently received fraudulent phone calls from people asking for personal data. Some have claimed to be calling from a charity organization while others have pretended to be students or staff members of your school. The school principal has asked you to write a circular to remind students of the proper ways to deal with calls from strangers. She has suggested that the circular should at least cover two points: (1) never disclose personal data to strangers on the phone; and (2) if a caller claims to be a student or a staff member of your school, take down the caller’s information and report the case to the school management. Write about 400 words.

Subject: Telephone requests for personal data
Dear All,
We have recently received a number of fraudulent1 phone calls from people asking for details of our members. Some have claimed to be calling from a charity organisation whilst others have pretended to be a schoolmate or a staff member of our school.

Callers claiming to be charity organizations
Whilst we should ensure that calls from genuine charity organizations are responded to kindly and friendly, we must also be aware that it can be a technique of advertising sales people or even unruly elements1 to pretend to be calling from a charity organization in order to obtain personal data, possibly for some undesirable purposes2.
1 unruly elements社會的非法份子
2 undesirable purposes 不良目的
It is therefore advisable to ask the caller how he/she has obtained your telephone number. You may also take down the caller’s details and offer to get back to them. Any genuine charity organization will be happy with these requests. If the caller is reluctant to pass on his/her details in this way, tell them squarely1 that you are not going to answer any of his/her questions and then hang up.
1 squarely 直截了當地
If a caller leaves the information you ask for, you can then search on the Internet and verify the details provided by the caller. Always exercise care and caution in deciding whether to call back or not. Consult your teachers or parents if you are in doubt.
Callers claiming to be from our school
In the case of callers claiming to be a schoolmate, a member of another society or a staff member of our school, please do not give out any information, but ask the caller for his information and offer to call the person back shortly. You can then pass the details to your form master for further action. Never use the details that the caller provides to call back.
We should never give out or confirm to strangers personal information such as mobile or home phone numbers, name or address. Always bear in mind that in today’s world of advanced technology, cybercrime1 is rampant2 around the world. To safeguard your personal interests, you should always treat your own personal data as critical assets that must be guarded at all times3.

To help us monitor the situation closely, please let me know if you have received any such calls.
Many thanks,
Chris Wong
